This painting course will use a mixture of gallery and museum visits, and practical painting lessons to learn skills from the classical and Modern masters, putting some of their techniques into practice. By studying specific paintings, both modern and historical as examples of technique, style and artistic expression, students will gain practical knowledge and experience to develop their own painting. Themes will include; Painting light and shadow, (e.g. Rembrandt, Caravaggio). The use of colour to describe form, (Cezanne, Matisse), Transparent glazing techniques (Turner, Rothko) and direct ‘alla prima’ painting techniques (e.g. Impressionism/post Impressionism- Monet, Sickert).

Drawing Volume, Form and Space; Linear and Aerial Perspective; Tonal Drawing; Drawing from Observation; Drawing the Human Figure; Drawing as a Preparation for Painting (sketchbooks, preparatory and compositional drawings); Thinking through ideas with drawing; Drawing techniques and materials (pencil, charcoal pen brush wash).

Drawing and Painting in different media in the categories of Figure, Still Life, Portrait, Landscape, and Flower and Imaginative painting. Lessons with set themes and exercises that will begin to help you develop technical competence in your individual style, with examples and demonstration as guidance. Group and one to one teaching to help you discover your own creative and imaginative response to set themes.
Painting hands, figures and faces

This painting course will provide a focused study on how to paint and draw the human figure in the context of studying how to represent hands, figures and faces. Painting Hands, Figures and Faces will concentrate on the specific skills the student will need for painting these forms of the human figure in a realistic/naturalistic style.
